hi! i'm monica carolan. i am a writer, art therapist, and founder of only if you let them.
i grew up between the united states and italy, traveling back and forth numerous times a year, splitting time between families, cultures, and friends. because my stay in both places was never permanent, friend groups were harder to form, and long-lasting relationships were difficult to develop. this constant change and sense of misplacement forced me to be best friends with myself - to enjoy my own company so much, that the company of others would be an added plus, but never expected.
this sense of aloneness that filled my days developed a curiosity towards the human condition of which i constantly seeked answers. i would sit and watch people and how they interacted with one another. i tried to understand the hurt and pain that humans felt, and yearned to find similarities in the underlying cause of it all. through this inward traveling, i concluded that there are common threads of human nature, independent of our sex, religion, race, or class, that link us in a way that dissipates loneliness. there is a magic in the interconnected nature of it all, and these common threads of both sadnesses and joys connect us to people we have never met.
only if you let them is a movement for the ones who see things a bit differently - for the round pegs in the square holes, for the “social misfits” - to feel less alone. we are conditioned at a young age to believe that going to school, buying a house, getting married and having children is the end goal. that narrative may suit the majority of the population, although there are still many people who believe in something different.
i would like the book to lead as a source of encouragment for people on a less traditional path, and the art workshops to help us calmly reflect, find our own peace and move beyond self imposed walls in our lives.
thank you for reading about me and only if you let them. i truly appreciate it very much! please do reach out to me with absolutely any questions or suggestions, i would love to hear from you.
